This may be over exaggerating, but as you can see there is a picture of a banana and a picture of a sexy ass woman. Let's say this is an ad for a banana. I am not really one to buy bananas, but I would damn sure buy that banana. Maybe I am just an ignorant consumer, however getting majestic chicas to help advertise your product helps sell. We don't really know if the banana is a better product than other bananas or not, but some consumers would rather buy from her than a thug man. The only way to know is to actually taste test the banana or get information from a trusted source. Opinions may differ, but... ways of knowing.

I think that this is more of a controversial topic than that of a knowledge issue, but the topic still stands present. That in our society sex does indeed sell, in that people feel more inclined to buy certain products if it means that they could in some sense be getting what the product advertises(in terms of the sex part regarding looks, women, men, etc).
ReplyDeleteSpencer--what happens if the ad in question isolates (or angers) a sizeable portion of the population? What if a banana boycott ensues? What if the ad runs during "family broadcast" time (like the Super Bowl or American Idol). Do the rules change?
ReplyDeleteKQ: Should there be ethical standards applied to advertising?
